AI agents are becoming the new storefront

The next battle for commerce will be fought inside AI-mediated journeys, where structured data and machine-readable relevance shape what gets recommended.

Search is no longer the only gateway

For two decades, digital commerce strategy assumed that people would search, compare and decide. AI agents are beginning to compress those steps into a single interaction.

The commercial consequence is profound: the interface that interprets intent may influence the shortlist before a shopper ever reaches a retailer or brand website.

The storefront is becoming invisible

A storefront used to be a place. Then it became a website. In an agentic journey, it becomes the combination of product data, availability, pricing, trust signals and the ability to complete a task.

Brands that look compelling to humans but remain difficult for machines to interpret risk losing visibility at the moment recommendations are formed.

Structured data becomes a growth capability

Product titles, attributes, compatibility, delivery promises, returns and merchant credibility can no longer be treated as operational details. They are inputs into recommendation systems.

The brands that organise this information consistently across channels will make it easier for agents to understand when, why and for whom their products are relevant.

Marketing must influence the recommendation layer

Traditional marketing optimises attention. Agentic commerce adds a second requirement: making the proposition legible to systems that evaluate alternatives on a shopper’s behalf.

This does not eliminate brand. It changes how brand, product evidence and commercial execution work together. Preference still matters, but incomplete information may prevent the brand from entering consideration at all.

What leaders should do now

Audit the product and merchant information an AI system would need to recommend, compare and transact confidently. Identify missing attributes, inconsistent claims and disconnected systems.

Then define ownership across commerce, marketing, technology and operations. Agent readiness is not an SEO project. It is a cross-functional commercial capability.
